The tunnel at the Enchanted Castle was discovered by archaeologists from Mary
Washington College working on the site. A portion of the tunnel has been excavated, including the stairts leading down to it from the basement. It is believed that the tunnel leads to a cistern which has been located in the side yard, rather than functioning as a getaway tunnel in case of Indian attack as many first speculated. Excavation work on the tunnel was called off after it began to collapse under the weight of the dirt above it.
