Much of what is known about the architecture of the Enchanted Castle was found during archaeology from the mid to late 20th century. Archaeologists have found the basement's brick floor as well as the base of the unique cross-shaped chimney that heated the house. Archaeologists have also found remnants of building materials such as bricks, schist, nails, slate shingles and sandstone columns and blocks. These findings reveal a high level of ornamentation on the Enchanted Castle, despite its remote location. Future findings may reveal more about the type of house Spotswood built and the people who called Germanna home.

Brick Basement Floor

The Chimney Base - This central chimney base is cross-shaped, which would have provided four corner fireplaces on each floor of the Enchanted Castle. The remains of marble have also been found, which suggests that the fireplaces most likely had marble mantles and surrounds.

Sandstone Block - This sandstone block is an example of the classically carved blocks which were found at the site. These decorative blocks would have adorned the exterior of the structure, most likely around doors, windows, and chimneys. These stones may have also created a belt course, water table, or quioning on the exterior of the building.

Sandstone Column - Like the sandstone block, this column is a decorative feature, which would have been found on the exterior of the Enchanted Castle.

Bricks

Slate Roof Shingles

Nails- A large number of nails were found at the Enchanted Castle site, which indicates that a large percentage of the home was constructed of wood.
